Best Assetto Corsa Rally Settings for Thrustmaster T248

Assetto Corsa Rally is a new rally simulator that just released in Early Access. It currently has limited content, but I'm very excited for the eventual full release. The physics and force feedback are already excellent, so there is an incredible foundation to build out the full game.

The Thrustmaster T248 works great with it. The only annoyance is the lack of a Soft Lock feature, so you have to change your steering angle manually. Other than that, the experience has been great.

In this guide, I will show you the settings I use to improve the force feedback and what you may want to adjust for your own setup.

Thrustmaster Settings

The lack of a Soft Lock is the biggest problem in the game. Currently, when you reach the full steering lock of the in-game car, your wheel can freely turn past it, and the game ignores this input. Worse yet, the force feedback will also push past it, making it very difficult to control slides or spins, as any input is being ignored at that point. It feels very strange when this happens.

The easiest thing to do is to set the closest value that is available on the wheel and update the in-game Steering Lock value accordingly. If you don't care about using the real world steering angle, you can set anything you like on the wheel, and set the Steering Lock in game to 0.

On-Wheel Setting Value
ROT Varies by car
FORCE 4
FFB 1

FORCE at 4 bars with FFB at 1 creates a perfectly linear force feedback response with no clipping, which is the ideal for any racing game.

TM Control Panel Setting Value
Rotation Varies by car
Overall Strength of all forces 65%
Constant 100%
Periodic 100%
Spring 100%
Damper 100%
BOOST Off
Auto-Center by the game

Rotation and Overall Strength are identical to the ROT and FORCE wheel settings, respectively. Changing it in one place overwrites the other. I recommend changing these on the wheel and ignoring the values in the Thrustmaster Control Panel.

Spring is not used by Assetto Corsa Rally.

Damper is used for the in-game Damper setting.

BOOST should always be turned off. For an in-depth look as to why, see my BOOST Force Feedback Analysis.

Assetto Corsa Rally Settings

In Settings > Inputs > Input Bindings:

Setting Value
Active Controller Device Racing Wheel

You will need to manually bind the steering, pedals and any buttons you want to use. There's currently a bug preventing you from binding the directional arrows, so you won't be able to navigate the menus with the wheel alone.

In Settings > Inputs > Force Feedback:

Setting Value
Gain 90
Minimum Force 0
Damper 10
Steering Lock Varies by car

Gain is the overall strength of the force feedback. This should be fairly light, as rally cars don't have heavy steering.

Minimum Force raises the lightest forces so they can be felt more strongly. In practice, this turns up the road texture vibrations. This is not necessary on these wheels.

Damper adds some weight to the wheel when it is stopped.

Steering Lock needs to match what you have set in the Thrustmaster Control Panel or what you have set on the wheel itself. If you don't care about using the real world steering angle, you can set anything you like on the wheel, and set this to 0.

Conclusion

Rally is my favorite type of racing game. I've always wondered what a rally game would be like if it was built on the Assetto Corsa physics engine and now we're finally getting that exact thing. I'm very excited to see how this develops.
